Top Jerry Brown adviser running for Assembly in East Bay

Steve Glazer — the Orinda mayor who is of Gov. Jerry Brown’s top political advisors and one the masterminds of his 2010 election — is running for Assembly in the Contra Costa/Alameda County seat that state Rep. Joan Buchanan is termed out of in 2014.

While Glazer told us Tuesday that the Guv is “supportive,” he already has snagged an endorsement from the Brown family: First Dog Sutter Brown sort of endorsed Glazer Tuesday, “saying” on Twitter Tuesday that he was “Considering new Twitter name: @sutter4steve. #w00f.” (Oh, just don’t ask about the dog. It’s California. Better — ask Chronicle Comrade Debra Saunders. Though, in some corners of the state, Sutter’s endorsement is more powerful. )

So why would Glazer leave a gig where he’s whispering in the ear of the governor of the largest state of the union to be one of many in the Assembly?

“I’m looking for a different way to serve,” said Glazer, who has known Brown for three decades and worked as a political and public affairs consultant on myriad other campaigns. “Public service is very fulfilling — trying to help people by creating public policy.”

And really, it’s not like he’s not going to be advising Brown just because he’s in the Assembly.

Glazer is also slated to serve as a trustee — appointed by Brown — to the California State University Board of Trustees until 2019. Should he be elected, he could still serve there — Lt. Guv Gavin Newsom and Assembly Speaker John Perez also do double duty. Glazer waives his $100 per day fee there.

Politically, with no Republican opponent emerging — at this point — Brown’s 2014 re-elect campaign doesn’t portend to be nearly as strenuous as his 2010 throwdown against GOP billionaire Meg Whitman. So maybe Glazer will have a little extra time on his hands.

A 2014 campaign sight we’re waiting to see: Jerry Brown handing out “Glazer for Assembly” leaflets outside the Buffalo Wild Wings in Dublin.
